Read an Area of the Document

Select an area of the document to be analyzed.

  1. Open OnDevice OCR Business and click “Name Files” → “New Template”.
  1. Click “Test with Sample Files” and choose one or more invoices.
  2. Remove the “Original Name” component by clicking the “x”.
  3. Click “Search an Area in the Document”.
  1. Drag with the mouse to select an area of the document that contains the term or value you are looking for. You can zoom into the document with the mouse wheel or the trackpad.

You now have three different options, or methods, of selection.

1. A value next to a label#

This method works exactly as described under “Option 2”, except that this time the search is limited to a defined area. With more difficult layouts, this can sometimes work more reliably.

2. Select text#

Once you have selected an area of the document, the text found in that area is read without a search term.

This can be useful if a value cannot be found via a fixed label or is difficult to read, for example at a fixed position in a table.

  1. Drag the area over the column and specify under “Use” which line is taken. In this example, we choose the bottom line.
  1. Since documents are rarely exactly identical, you can use “Anchor to” → “Total” to specify that the area always “moves along”, even if the column is in a different position in the next document.

3. Read and name documents with AI#

For difficult search terms such as “sender”, “company”, “recipient”, or similar, you can use local AI models such as “Apple Intelligence” to analyze the documents. You can find the instructions under “Name files with Apple Intelligence and local AI models”.
